Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for operations
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply run casing documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
   • Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activity
   • Communicate with other personnel at site according to work requirements and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received
   • Confirm availability and status of necessary permits to work according to operational and legislative requirements
   • Confirm availability of necessary third party utilities
   • Check grade or grades of casing
   • Supervise crew in positioning casing on racks
   • Measure and record casing in writing according to workplace procedures
   • Identify joint by the numerical order in which it will be run in the hole and its measured length
   • Supervise crew to remove thread protectors, rabbit casing, clean and lubricate threads
   • Check casing shoe and hanger joints for damage to threads, sealing surfaces and flapper valves where fitted
   • Assemble and check operating conditions of casing running equipment
   • Line up pumps to fill casing during running operation
2. Perform procedures for running casing
   • Steady casing prior to stabbing
   • Align casing for make-up
   • Prepare next casing for running in
   • Pull slips according to run in procedures
   • Assist in running casing

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

assist in running casing on at least two occasions.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply documentation, policies and procedures required for running casing

work with others to assist in running casing to meet required outcomes, including working as directed by the driller.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and established requirements for tripping casing, including those for:

complying with site and manufacturer requirements and procedures

safe operating procedures when operating equipment

environmental issues

rig maintenance

fault finding and reporting

normal running casing operations

non-routine running casing operations

types and characteristics of materials including flammable, toxic, corrosive, explosive and radioactive

draw works characteristics, technical capability and limitations.
